A record label’s name doesn’t always mean much. With Back2Jax Productions, it does.
Ryan Mackin, the Rhode Island-born hip-hop artist who founded the label in 2025, chose that name to mark something specific. According to the company’s own account, a return to Jacksonville, Florida reignited his creative direction and moved him to build something of his own. Before that trip, he had been recording under a different name and working to establish himself as an artist. After it, there was a company and a catalog organized around a clear principle: the Back2Jax Productions website describes the label as built around artist ownership.
That phrase is doing real work. Mackin runs Back2Jax as CEO, overseeing music releases, marketing, video editing, and cover art production alongside his own recording. The label was built to operate independently. The company’s site notes that he remains open to major label partnerships under the right terms, though Back2Jax was designed to function without that arrangement. The ownership model is both how the business operates and why it was started.
The current catalog, available through the Ryan Mackin artist page, runs to more than a dozen tracks. Some move toward harder hip-hop terrain. Others pull in a slower, more interior direction. “It’s Possible,” released in December 2024, sits at the quieter end of that range. A collaboration with an artist credited as MileaHii appears on “The Top.” The writing across the catalog draws from personal experience in a way that is apparent without annotation.
Writing was the first thing, long before any of this. According to the company’s website, Mackin was removed from his mother’s care at age nine and spent years in unstable circumstances. He found his way to poetry and lyrics during that period, and the habit that started then did not stop. By the time he was recording with equipment, he already had years of practice in turning difficult material into something on a page.
He relocated to Florida at 16 and graduated from Fernandina Beach High School. A December 2025 press release noted that he began making rap music with friends during those years, using basic recording equipment. The writing was already there; the format shifted.
Between those early sessions and Back2Jax Productions, the working life covered a lot of ground. From 2014 to 2016, per that same announcement, he worked as an apprentice electrician at Bell Reeves Plumbing, Electric and Air Conditioning. After that came several years running Yulee Extreme Car Wash, handling daily operations. Sales work and modeling followed. He performed under the name Ryan Mackin Records from 2024 to 2025, a stretch that included, according to the announcement, a performance at Webster Hall in New York City, before founding Back2Jax Productions.
His daughter, as the company’s biographical material makes plain, has been his stated primary motivation since he began building Back2Jax.
A December 2025 announcement noted his selection for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, citing his emerging contributions to the music field. His mother, Jennifer, died that same month, on December 26, 2025. He wrote and released “I’m So Empty” directly afterward. What the company calls The Foundation Series, a separate upcoming project from the existing catalog, is listed on the site as coming soon.
