Willie James Ray III Launches the Willie Noir Obscura Era with AI-Driven Visuals and Keeps Dream Team Empire Building

On October 9, 2024, Willie James Ray III did something that most working musicians spend years resisting: he walked away from the stage name he had built. That morning, the rapper known as Lil Will since 2016 released his eighth studio album under a new professional identity, Willie Noir Obscura. The album was called Mastery, and it arrived with something that made the name change feel like more than rebranding copy.

Every one of the 13 tracks on the project received its own official music video, all of them produced using AI-generated imagery. Thirteen videos for a single album rollout, conceived and distributed independently, is the kind of undertaking that typically requires a production team, a label budget, and a release calendar managed by other people. For Willie Noir Obscura, it was done in-house, under the umbrella of his independent label and creative company, Dream Team Empire.

That tension between output volume and operational self-reliance has been the defining feature of his career since the start.

From Cahokia to Catalog

Willie James Ray III was born October 9, 1991, in Centreville, Illinois, and grew up in Cahokia, a working-class city in the Metro East region across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. He launched his music career on his own birthday in 2016, releasing his debut EP The World Is Mines, which featured singles “Heaven or Hell” and “Day 1s” with collaborator Kevo. A full-length album, Free World, followed the same year, with production contributions from DJ Radiohead Beats and Hurricane Beatz.

What came after reads less like a traditional discography and more like a proof-of-concept. By the company’s account, the catalog now spans nine albums, two EPs, 20 mixtapes, and more than 400 released songs across all major platforms. The pace of releases signals an artist who is also his own producer, engineer, and distribution operation.

In 2023 alone, two albums arrived. Prod By Lil Will, the sixth in the series, was a 20-song project on which Ray produced every instrumental himself, featuring his daughter, Rayinna Ray, and his son, Willie James Ray IV, among the credited collaborators. Six months later, Rothschild Dreams dropped on October 9, the seventh album in as many years. The company says the project generated millions of streams and marked a turning point in the career he had been assembling track by track since the beginning.

Building the Full-Stack Operation

Ray’s technical range runs the full width of independent music production. He records, mixes, and masters his own material, working across Pro Tools, FL Studio, and Logic Pro X. His video work has involved Premiere Pro and Final Cut, and beginning with Mastery, AI video generation became part of the post-production toolkit. That expansion is what made releasing 13 separate videos on a single album cycle operationally feasible for a label operating without major-label infrastructure.

Dream Team Empire, which Ray founded and leads as CEO, functions as the organizing structure for the music releases, the audio engineering services he makes available to other artists, and a merchandise line tied to the Goat Gang and Dream Team Empire brand names. Full catalog and service details are on his official site at iamlilwill.net, and the biography page and music videos archive are both accessible directly.

The name change in 2024 was not a reset. Willie Noir Obscura is the name under which Ray says the work has become more deliberately constructed, and Mastery was the evidence. The rebrand arrived after nearly a decade of independent releases and reflected a career at a different stage of its own ambitions, not a pivot away from what came before.

Family, Continuity, and What Comes Next

A consistent thread running through the catalog is the presence of Ray’s children in the work. His son, Willie James Ray IV, appears on “Everybody Hustle,” the lead single from Mastery. Both he and Rayinna Ray have been credited on earlier releases. In a music business where legacy is constructed project by project rather than through institutional support, the decision to bring family into the catalog has been an ongoing and deliberate one.

The most recent entry is Forever, released in 2026 as the ninth studio album, a 14-track project that continues under the Willie Noir Obscura name. The company reports a global streaming figure across the full catalog that it places in the billions, attributed to nearly a decade of independent distribution across all major platforms.

The version of this business that exists in 2026 is one that started with a debut EP on a birthday in 2016, added tools as they became available, and absorbed the scale of AI video production without outside help. The architecture of Dream Team Empire was built that way, and Willie James Ray III appears to be in no particular hurry to change the approach now.
